Our work for LOVEFiLM evolved into an opportunity to redesign the site incrementally from the inside out
LOVEFiLM is one of the UK’s most successful and growing online entertainment destinations. We worked with the product development team to redesign the core parts of the existing site, and to design and launch new services that would form the future of LOVEFiLM.
LOVEFiLM’s international scope presented a challenge: the business operates in multiple regions, there are multiple stakeholders, and there are over 1.2 million existing customers. Part of this challenge of scale was that the site had grown organically over many years: the design, user experience and functionality were inconsistent and needed to be brought into line.
This consolidation presented an opportunity to look at LOVEFiLM’s business needs and to build a service that would stand out in a fast-evolving and increasingly crowded online entertainment market.
LOVEFiLM came to Made by Many because of our approach to projects like this: facilitative, interactive, collaborative and communicative. We brought stakeholders together to gather requirements and work through how information should be presented; we conducted mapping exercises to help prioritise functionality; we also identified user needs and designed simple, beautiful pages that served these needs whilst meeting business goals.

We worked closely with the product team to manage the complexity of the service. There were close to 75,000 different titles, all available to rent online, some in multiple formats. There was a growing library of titles available to watch online, and many could also be purchased online. There were close to a million customer reviews, thousands of magazine articles and blog posts, and thousands of listings for every cinema in the UK. Our work touched all of these elements: not a stone was left unturned.
How it all went
By the end of our engagement we had refined the design of virtually every page and piece of functionality on the site. We had unified the look and feel, streamlined the sign up process, redesigned the homepage and optimised the product pages. In 2009 we helped launch the video on demand service, surely to become the future of LOVEFiLM.
