Skype in the classroom

Some of you may remember our recent post about our New Year's Eve work for Skype, where we conceived and built a global digital campaign for the brand around the new Skype iPhone app  with free video calling over 3G and WiFi.

That isn't all we've been labouring over for the brand. Today, New Media Age covered our latest project for Skype: a community for teachers and educators to connect and use Skype to enrich their students' educational experiences.

The motivation for building this online community was the realisation that teachers were reaching out to fellow educators themselves to arrange visual chats and learning exchanges between their classrooms. Skype were very keen to encourage this practical use of the service.

For now, the service is in closed beta amongst a number of teachers who pre-registered their interest in the service. It will be opened up to the public soon - keep an eye out for news of the Skype education community via Skype's various social media outlets: Facebook, Twitter and their blog

The NMA article (available only to paid subscribers) quoted Jaqueline Botterill, EMEA PR manager at Skype, who said:

“These communities are fragmented and the biggest barrier to schools using Skype is finding other classrooms that are signed up to it.”
“We’ve engaged with a group of passionate and active educators who are already using Skype in their classrooms,” said Botterill.

Made by Many's very own Justin McMurray is also quoted in the article. Justin mentions our next priorities with the project: expanding its reach and spreading word of the service to as many teachers as possible.

We'll have more on this front soon: stay tuned.
